Budgeting for Puerto Rico

Please utilize the following information to help you budget for your personal expenses in Puerto Rico.

Personal Budget

Although most everything will be included, depending on your booked tour, we recommend mapping out a personal budget for anything that is not included in the cost of your tour before arriving to Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, so USD is accepted. No matter what country you are from, know that most debit/credit cards do work in Puerto Rico (United States). Citizens of other countries are encouraged to bring USD or their home currency for exchange upon arrival. If you plan properly and bring some spending cash, spending money will be a breeze for you. Nonetheless, please budget according to your spending habits.

You are free to bring as much cash as you please, but you are required to claim anything over $10,000 USD on your customs form.

Remember, you will not need to budget for anything in the “Included” section of your booked tour description, nor the transportation to any of those experiences/excursions. You will only need to budget for the items found below that are not included in your tour.

International Flight

$170-$700 from Canada & the USA
€500-€1000 from Europe

Visa

Not all citizens of foreign countries are required to obtain a visa before entering Puerto Rico (a Untied States Territory), but please be advised that you might require a visa for entry. However, if you are not a citizen of the United States and you are concerned that you might need a visa, please visit our Visa Information page.

Important Note: US citizens do not need a passport to enter Puerto Rico.

Lunch & Drinks

Average Restaurants: $15-$35 per meal

The nicest restaurants can cost about $50-$75 per person for a full meal including drinks, appetizer, main plate, and dessert.

Water: $2-$4 per 1 liter bottle
Alcoholic Drinks: $5-$15 per drink on average

Extra Tours / Entertainment

Rainforest Tours: $125-$250 per person, depending on the tour
City Tours: FREE to $40 per person
Food Tours: $135-$150 per person
Horseback Tours: $40-$65 per person
Entry to Museums, Castles & Galleries: FREE to $12 per person
Entertainment Venues / Nightclubs: FREE to $25 per person

In-Country Transport

Airport Pickup / Drop-off: $45+, depending on your vehicle choice and destination
In-Town Taxi: $10+ per trip depending on distance (if you desire to explore on your own)

Souvenirs

Bag of Coffee: $20-$25 per pound
Cigars: plan on a minimum of $10 per cigar / $250 to $1000 per box (25)
Rum: $15-$55 on average per bottle
Paintings: $3-$175 depending on size
Ceramics: $6-$900 each
Wood Carvings: $3-$20
Butterfly Art: $30-$3000 each
Hammocks: $50-$200
Shirts: $10-$50
Postcards: $1

Tips

We always recommend, as an encouragement to those serving you, that if you believe that those persons went out of their way to make your experience over-the-top, feel free to tip them. It is not required, but it is a good encouragement for them to continue to give 110% for their travelers. The amount of your tips depend on the combination of your budget/generosity and how well you feel they served you. Gardner Tours Guide
BnB Host / Butler: $2-$5 per day
Restaurants: usually 15% of total cost
Bar Tenders: $1 per drink
Drivers: $5-$10 for long journeys
Experience Guides: $5-$10
Boat Captains: $100-$200 per boat per day is customary
